News broke that a second home was being swallowed by a sinkhole in Tampa, so I quickly found and analyzed three data sets (using Excel) to provide statistics behind Florida’s long history of sinkholes. I didn’t “have a thing for sinkholes” as Senior Producer Mike Noble suggested after taking initiative to send him my research; I simply saw an opportunity to use numbers and policy to round out a very visual story. In addition to mining the tabulated data, I contributed a summary of what Florida insurance companies offer to residents as a different angle for coverage. That information was illustrated with motion graphics. I also combed social media (utilizing geographic search tools) to find Tampa residents watching the sinkholes open, and cleared media for use across all ABC platforms and properties. Research and video were repackaged for Good Morning America 11/16/13.

“Kitchen Crackdown” is the second piece in this newscast. I field produced, assisted with video, voice tracking, sat with the editor, and researched foods containing partially hydrogenated oils for Dr. Richard Besser and Associate Producer Michael Koenigs.

For the “Legal Realism” segments, I researched audio clips and articles to assist with prep for each segment. I also screened calls to help shape lively conversations with former press secretary Robert Gibbs. One of my favorite days screening calls to curate live conversation was our “Open Phones 2013” show. In addition to assisting and brainstorming with the host and producers, I wrote and edited social media posts for Facebook and Twitter, coordinated with audio engineers to maintain The BLS landing pages, ad updated the CMS, oftentimes troubleshooting embeds with handwritten HTML.
